Stillpoint: A Winter Sound Bath for Renewal
By Stacy Lewis | AUM Studio Blog
Winter has its own kind of silence—not empty, but full. Beneath the hush of cold air and quiet earth lies a rhythm steady enough to steady us. Stillpoint is born from that rhythm: the pause between inhale and exhale, the moment between sound and silence.
At AUM Studio, each sound bath begins here—with the invitation to stop reaching outward and begin listening inward. In that stillness, the nervous system softens, breath deepens, and the body remembers its original state of coherence.
The Practice
This one-hour winter immersion blends the grounded tones of crystal singing bowls (A, G, F, C, D) with the resonance of a 32" wind gong, ocean and wave drums, ritual drum, and both TreeWorks and Cosmic Bamboo chimes.
- Low bowls (F, D): calm the root and heart—grounding breath and pulse.
- Higher tones (C, A, G): invite mental clarity and spacious awareness.
- Gong & wave drums: mirror wind, water, and breath for natural movement.
Through gentle layering and gradual transitions, the session guides the brain through alpha, theta, and delta states—from quiet focus to meditative flow to deep, restorative rest.
The Science of Stillness
When we listen to slow, rhythmic sound, our brains often respond by matching it—a process known as entrainment. In this landscape:
- Alpha (8–12 Hz) supports relaxation, present-moment awareness, and creativity.
- Theta (4–7 Hz) invites intuitive connection, emotional processing, and meditative depth.
- Delta (0.5–3 Hz) is linked with physical repair, immune balance, and deep sleep.
By moving through these frequencies in a predictable, gentle arc, the nervous system receives repeated signals of safety—supporting parasympathetic rest and renewal.
Why “Stillpoint”
In the language of yoga and sound healing, the stillpoint is where everything moves, yet nothing strains. Winter teaches that rest is an active practice—a choice to root instead of reach. As the year draws to a close, this practice becomes a ritual of returning—to quiet, to coherence, to the essential self that lives beneath all motion.
